ABSTRACT:
Title: A study to assess the adequacy of steps followed during nasogastric tube feeding among nursing personnels. Objectives: To assess the adequacy of steps followed during nasogastric tube feeding, to associate the adequacy of steps followed during nasogastric tube feeding with selected socio demographic and clinical data variables. Methodology: The research design adopted for the study was non-experimental descriptive design. Random sampling technique (lottery method) was adopted to choose the samples. The study was conducted among 60 nursing personnels providing nasogastric tube feeding in Neuro medical intensive care unit (NMICU), Multidisciplinary critical care unit(MCCU), Medical ICU, Semi ICU, Neuro surgical ICU and Neuro surgical recovery ICU of Jubilee mission medical college and Research institute. Structured observational checklist was used to assess the adequacy of steps followed during nasogastric tube feeding and structured questionnaire was used to collect socio demographic and clinical data variables. Discussion: Majority of the sample belongs to the age group of 18-28yrs (60%). 98.34% were females. A greater portion of the samples had qualification of diploma in nursing (40%), remaining 30% had qualification of BSc nursing while 30% were nursing students and 83.3% had fluid plan. The result shows that 1.66% of nursing personnels followed adequate pre-procedure steps, 93.33% of nursing personnels followed moderately adequate pre-procedure steps and 5% followed inadequate pre-procedure steps during nasogastric tube feeding. 86.66% of nursing personnels followed adequate intra procedure steps, 10% followed moderately adequate intra procedure steps and 3.33% followed inadequate intra procedure during nasogastric tube feeding. 70% of nursing personnels followed adequate post procedure steps. It was found that there is association between adequacy of steps followed during nasogastric tube feeding with age of nursing personnels and fluid plan. Thus, the study results showed that 60% of nursing personnels followed adequate steps and 40% followed moderately adequate steps during nasogastric tube feeding. As the age of the nursing personnels increase there is an increase in the adequacy of steps followed during nasogastric tube feeding and presence of fluid plan also increase the adequacy of steps followed during nasogastric tube feeding.
