ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) refers to care organised and provided to women in a manner that upholds dignity, privacy, confidentiality, informed choice, and freedom from harm or mistreatment during labour and childbirth. The LaQshya initiative in India aims to improve the quality of labour room and maternity OT services while emphasising RMC. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme (STP) on knowledge regarding RMC and the implementation of LaQshya guidelines among nursing students in selected nursing colleges of Jammu & Kashmir. Methods: A quantitative, pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was adopted. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 80 nursing students. Data were collected using a validated structured knowledge questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including paired t-test and chi-square test, were used for data analysis. Results: In the pre-test, 68.75% of students had inadequate knowledge, 18.75% had moderate knowledge, and only 12.5% had adequate knowledge (mean=3.25, SD=2.96). After administration of the STP, 63.75% demonstrated adequate knowledge, 21.25% moderate knowledge, and 15% inadequate knowledge (mean=7.38, SD=2.78). The paired t-test value (t=16.53, df=79, p=0.0001) indicated a significant improvement after the STP. Significant associations were observed between post-test knowledge and gender, type of nursing programme, and previous knowledge (p<0.05). Conclusion: The structured teaching programme significantly improved the knowledge of nursing students regarding RMC and LaQshya guidelines. Incorporating structured educational interventions into nursing curricula can enhance respectful and quality maternity care practices.
