ABSTRACT:
Childhood choking is a global health concern that particularly affects children under the age of 5, and it is primarily attributed to the tendency of young children to explore their surroundings by placing objects into their mouth. This study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of a Structured Teaching Programme (STP) and a Self-Instructional Module (SIM) on the knowledge regarding management of choking in children among mothers of under five children in tertiary care hospital in Kottayam district. Quantitative research approach with quasi experimental non equivalent pre-test post- test control group design was adopted for the study. 40 mothers were selected using Non probability purposive sampling technique. The experimental group mothers received STP and the control group received SIM. The level of knowledge score was assessed by structured knowledge questionnaire. The findings revealed that post-test of STP group 30% had adequate knowledge and none of them had inadequate knowledge where as in pre-test 50% had inadequate knowledge. The pre-test mean value was 14.65 and SD of 5.37 and in the post test mean value was 20.55 with SD of 3.01. it showed that there was a high statistically significant difference in the level of knowledge with ‘t’ value of 4.28 at p< 0.05 level which in turn indicates that STP was effective in improving the knowledge among mothers of under-five children. Where as in the post test of SIM group 15% gained adequate knowledge and in pre-test 40% had inadequate knowledge. The pre-test mean value was 16 and SD of 2.84 and in the post test mean value was 18.6 with SD of 2.74. it showed that there was a high statistically significant difference in the level of knowledge with ‘t’ value of 2.95 at p<0.05 level which again confirms that SIM was also effective in improving the knowledge regarding the management of chocking among mothers of under-five children. The STP group demonstrated higher knowledge improvement (mean = 20.55, t = 4.28) compared to the SIM group (mean = 18.6, t = 2.95), indicating that the STP was more effective and the calculated unpaired t value of (3.03) which was found to be significant at P less than 0.05 level. Therefore, study findings affirming that both educational interventions were effective, with the Structured Teaching Programme (STP) showing greater efficacy in improving mothers’ knowledge on choking management in under-five children.
