ABSTRACT:
Introduction: The toddler period extends from one year to three years of age. During this time the individual emerges from total dependency of infancy into the beginning of independence or autonomy. The toddler who learned to trust the parents during infancy now can use this trust in exploration and investigation of the world beyond the parent’s arms. This is the beginning of the developmental stages which includes Motor, Adaptive, Language, Personal social characteristics of Toddlers. The American academy of pediatrics (2007) recommends that a baby should be breast fed exclusively for six months and at least for one year of life along with complementary foods for the good growth and development quotient of toddlers. Materials and Methods: Descriptive and Retrospective Design was used for the study with an explorative approach. Purposive Sampling technique was used on the basis of inclusion criteria. Conceptual frame work was formulated according to Pender’s N Health Promotion model. Samples used for the study was Toddlers and their mothers who fulfill the inclusion criteria. Total sample size for the study was 66. The instrument used for data collection procedure was structured dichotonomous interview questionnaire which was used to identify the breast feeding practices and modified Gessels behavioral schedule was used to observe and measure the developmental quotient among toddlers. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. Results: The results showed that there was a significant correlation between breast feeding practices and the developmental quotient (p=<0.001) at 0.05 level of significance. There was a significant association between religion of toddlers (p=<0.001) with the developmental quotient at 0.05 level of significance and there was a significant association between age (p=0.04) and education of the mothers (p=0.001), type of the house (p=<0.001) and the type of family (p=0.001) with the developmental quotient at 0.05 level of significance. Conclusion: The results concluded that there was a significant correlation between breast feeding practice of the mothers and the developmental quotient of toddlers. So awareness regarding breast feeding practices and its relationship with the developmental quotient was given through health education leaflet for future mothers.
