INTRODUCTION:

Corona virus is among the number of those viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, the virus cause respiratory infection, including common cold, typically mild though severe form such as SARS, MERS, EBOLA and COVID-191. This family of viruses can be lethal, and its symptoms vary from species to species; in chickens, they cause URTI, in cows and pigs these family of viruses cause diarrhea. yet, there is no vaccine or antiviral drug to prevent or treat human corona virus infection. The word corona in corona virus means ‘CROW’ in Latin. Corona virus gets its name from the crow like spikes that it has on its structural surface2. They are enveloped virus with a positive sense single stranded RNA genome and a nucleocapsid of helical symmetry. They are wrapped in a icosahedra protein shell. The outbreak of Corona virus disease (COVID-19) has been declared a Public Health Emergency of international concern [PHEIC] and the virus has now spread to many countries and territories while a lot more is still unknown about the virus that led for the cause of COVID-19. The purpose of study is to provide clear and actionable guidance for safe operation through the prevention. Early detection and control of COVID-19 in educational facilities.

Education can encourage students to become advocates for disease prevention and control at home in school and in community by talking to others that how to prevent the spread of virus.

Lei fang, George karakiulakis, Michael Roth (2020 May 18): A research was conducted, on patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus at the increased risk for COVID-19 infection. The patient with cardiac disease, hypertension, or diabetes, who are treated with ACE2-increasing drugs are at high risk for severe COVID-19 infection and therefore should be monitored for ACE2 modulating medication, such as ACE inhibitor ARBs3.

Six patients were asymptomatic, 22 had upper respiratory tract infection symptoms and eight had lower respiratory tract infection symptoms. Twenty cases were treated in this study and showed a significance reduction of the viral carriage at D6-post inclusion compared to controls, and much lower average carrying duration than reported of untreated patient in the literature. Azithromycin added to Hydroxychloroquine was significantly more efficient for virus elimination.

COVID-19 - continuous to spread, it is important to note that communities took action to prevent the further transmission and reduce the impact of outbreak and support various control measures.

India currently has the fourth largest number of cases in Asia with number of cases reaches the 112,359 marks on [20 may 2020]. India case fatality rate is relatively lower at 3.09% against the global 6.63% as of 20 may 2020.

DISCUSSION:

The pre- test level of knowledge regarding awareness of COVID-19 among BSc. Nursing Ist year students were (14%) students had inadequate knowledge, (78%) students had moderate knowledge, and 16(8%) students had adequate knowledge.

This result was consistent with the study conducted by Mr. Visha Kantamurthy D G, Mr. Hemeshamurthy (2021) on the assessment in the present study, the knowledge, attitude, and practice of the nursing officers towards COVID-19 pandemic, 85% of the participants had extensive knowledge of COVID-19. In addition, more than 83.66% of the participants had a positive attitude towards COVID-19 and 79.8% of the participants had good practice.

The post-test level of knowledge regarding awareness of COVID-19 among B.S.c Nursing Ist year students were that (38%) students have moderate knowledge, (62%) students have adequate knowledge and no one have inadequate knowledge.

This study consistent with the study conducted by AmirhosseinErfani, Reza Shahriarirad (2020) reported that among total of 8591 participants, the overall achieved knowledge score regarding COVID-19 characterstics was 90% with 60.8% of the general population having moderate knowledge towards the disease. Also, an overall score of 85% was achieved regarding the knowledge of the mode of the transmission and the group at higher risk of COVID-19. Regarding the attitude towards and practice of COVID-19 an overall score of 90%and 89% of the total score were achieved among the given population.

In pre-test level of knowledge regarding awareness of COVID-19 among B.S.c Nursing Ist year students were (14%) students had inadequate knowledge,(78%) students had moderate knowledgeand 16(8%) students had adequate knowledge. The post-test level of knowledge regarding awareness of COVID-19 among B.S.c Nursing Ist year students were that (38%) students have moderate knowledge, (62%) students have adequate knowledge, and no one have inadequate knowledge. This shows that students have less knowledge in pre- test then that in post-test. The “t” test value 15.12 (S) found to be highly significant at the level of (P<0.05). It is inferred that there is improvement in the level of knowledge among students of Bee Enn college of Nursing after planned teaching program.

This study was consistent with the study conducted by Melisa Fernandes, Jyoti R. Thakur, Manisha S.Gavanje (2021). The study results revealed that total of 421 nursing students participated across Maharashtra state. And majority of sample had average knowledge of COVID-19.

The association between post test level of awareness with selected demographic variables among BSc. Nursing students of selected college. Regarding age, the chi square value was 2.59(p<0.05> which was non significant. Regarding Sex, the chi square value was 4.01(p<0.05) which was non significant. Regarding area, the chi square value was 0.01(p<0, 05> which was non significant. Regarding source of knowledge, the chi square value was 0.06(p>0,05) which was non significant. Regarding any history of COVID-19, the chi square value was 0(p>0.05) which was significant. Regarding Socio- economic status, the chi square value was 5.68(p>0.05) which was non significant.

This study was consistent with the study conducted by yang J, Zheng Y, Gou X(2021). The study results revealed that the total score of self reflection and critical thinking had a significant positive correlation.

The knowledge and awareness about COVID-19 was provided through power point presentation.  After a gap of 10 days, a retest is done among the same students. The tool was found to be reliable. The data gathered were analyzed and interpreted in terms of the objectives of the study. Non probability sampling technique i.e. purposive sampling technique was used to collect the data from to respondents of the study. Data was organized and interpreted by using both descriptive and inferential statistics.

SUMMARY OF THE STUDY FINDINGS:

In study findings, more than half of the respondents (64%) fell under the age group of 17-19 years, more than half of students (70%) were females, and more than half of students (94%) were from rural areas. Regarding source of knowledge (74%) through mass media. Regarding source of knowledge (76%) through mass media. Regarding any history regarding covid +ve (100%) students having other history.

The present study confirms that the overall knowledge regarding awareness of COVID-19 in pretest was inadequate. This may due to lack of education, unawareness, lack of exposure to awareness regarding COVID-19.

There was a considerable improvement of knowledge after planned teaching program on regarding awareness of COVID-19. The post test results showed that more than half of students (38%) have moderate knowledge. (62%) students have adequate knowledge.

The “t” test score between the pretest and post -test knowledge regarding COVID -19 among BSc. Nursing students was 12.9(significant at the level of 0.05). This suggested that the planned teaching program was effective and it increased the knowledge of BEE ENN college students on COVID-19.

Conclusion:

The main study concluded that the existing knowledge among BSc. Nursing students regarding COVID-19 was inadequate. An effective planned teaching program was framed with the help of power point presentation and some visuals were also made. This effective   teaching program had a great  influence about the general awareness regarding COVID-19.After providing an effective planned teaching program, successful completion of post-test, we came to know that students has got an adequate awareness regarding COVID-19. As result in reseachers also believed that the students took part in the research had created satisfactory awareness regarding COVID-19.
